First time at a military graduation?
Three things nobody tells you:
- Arrive by 6 AM, not 9 AM. Parking lots fill early and security takes time.
- Tap Out is chaotic. Plan a meeting spot before the Coin Ceremony.
- Thursday curfew is 6:00 PM, earlier than Wednesday. Use it to help your Airman pack for tech school.
Wednesday: Coin Ceremony & Tap Out
Wednesday runs at the Pfingston Reception Center: the Airman's Run kicks off at 7:30a, the Coin Ceremony follows at 9:30a, and Tap Out comes right after. Town Pass starts around ~10:30a and runs until 8:00 PM.

The moment everyone is waiting for. At the end of the Coin Ceremony, families are invited onto the floor to find their Airman. You tap them on the shoulder, and that's the first physical contact since they shipped 7.5 weeks ago. It is chaotic. Hundreds of families are moving at once.
Coordinate a meeting spot in advance (e.g., "southeast corner of the bleachers"). Cell signal inside the PRC can be unreliable with so many people.
Wearing your helps you spot each other in the crowd.
Thursday: Graduation Parade
The Parade is at a separate location from the PRC. The PRC opens at for families who want to drop bags or use restrooms first. Shuttle buses depart for the Parade Grounds at 7:30a. You can also drive, but parking is limited. Expect bigger crowds than Wednesday.

After the Parade
begins around 10:00 AM after dismissal. Thursday curfew is , two hours earlier than Wednesday. Use this time to help your Airman and enjoy your last hours together before they ship out Friday morning.
What if it rains?
What happens in severe weather?
Graduation does not move indoors to the Reception Center, that's a common misconception. Ceremonies shift to your Airman's Airman Training Complex or squadron dorm area instead. Whether families can be there depends on a same-day call, see below.
How will I know?
An initial decision on whether families are authorized at the Squadrons is made no later than on graduation day, posted on the BMT Facebook page. It can change again later that morning if conditions shift, so check the page again if you are unsure. Your schedule on the home page also flags a rain plan automatically once the forecast crosses our weather trigger.
Where do we reunite?
If families are not permitted at the Squadrons, your Airman comes to the Reception Center after the ceremony to find you there, the same meeting point as a normal-weather day. Public Affairs also tries to hold one squadron's ceremony at the Reception Center itself so some families can watch in person.
Families waiting on word from the Squadrons wait it out off base until the call comes. Being minutes from the gate means less time stuck in weather traffic once you know where to go.
What else to know
Photos and Videos: What's Allowed
are allowed at both outdoor ceremonies.
During Tap Out, everyone is recording. Hold your phone high to film over the crowd or designate one family member as the photographer so others can focus on the moment.
Do not photograph security checkpoints, gate operations, or restricted areas.
Ceremony areas are fine.
How Many Guests Can Attend?

No per-Airman seating limit.
Bleacher seating, first-come, first-served. Arrive early for the best spots.

Base access: Recent policy has allowed up to (18+) per trainee who don't already have a military/DoD ID, but BMT sets the actual count and it isn't published on the official site. Your Airman's welcome letter from the BMT Commander is the authoritative source for your week. Children under 17 don't need a pass and don't count toward the limit. Family members with their own DoD-issued ID (including Coast Guard CACs, but not non-DoD federal PIV badges) can enter independently.

Tips From Families Who've Been
- Let your Airman know you are coming. Families have missed their Airman at Tap Out due to miscommunication about which family members would attend.
- Make restaurant reservations in advance. Graduation weekends fill restaurants near Lackland fast. Book Wednesday and Thursday dinner spots before you arrive. See the Things to Do guide for recommendations.
- Scope out your viewing spot early.For the Airman's Run, the route map is posted at the PRC. Pick a spot where you can see and photograph your Airman as they pass.
- to Airmen before Town Pass. Have a backup meeting spot at the PRC since cell signal is unreliable when thousands of people are on base.
- Your Airman must stay in uniform and follow strict conduct rules during Town Pass, including brief displays of affection only during ceremony events. Don't take it personally.
Friday: Tech School and Goodbyes
, though some may leave late Thursday evening or have additional liberty days over the weekend before a Monday departure. It depends on their individual tech school orders. Your Airman will know their departure timeline by graduation day.
Airmen must be able to carry everything they own when they ship, including all issued gear. Large items or extra electronics need to be mailed to their tech school location. Use Thursday Town Pass to help them (green duffle, backpack, one personal suitcase). Pack civilian clothes, toiletries, and chargers.
Your last day together
Thursday Town Pass may be your last in-person time before they leave. Help them pack, share a good meal, and make the most of those final hours.

- What happens during the BMT Coin Ceremony?
- The Coin Ceremony begins at 9:30 AM on Wednesday inside the Pfingston Reception Center. Trainees march in formation and command staff give a few short remarks. Then each trainee gets called forward to receive their Airman's Coin, officially making them an Airman. Right after the coins, Tap Out begins: families come down onto the floor to find their Airman for the first time since shipping. The ceremony itself runs about 60 to 90 minutes.
